Any artist who takes their name and cover photo from 1984's The
Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension gets some
interest from me. But the artist name is the most distinctly creative
element about the release. "Doin' your duty for the booty" has
pleasant, downtempo grooves, livened with the occasional vocal sample
and synth noise. "A Second Hand" ( purchase/download) is funky, with a nice steel drum-hook
and what sounds like a Cypress Hill vocal sample. The drums are from
wherever De La Soul's "Me, Myself and I" got its drums, and it is a
pleasant midtempo dance track. "Sonny Daze" ( purchase/download) makes the late-90s big
beat sounds live again, and its Bonus Beats (the last track on the
disc), would make a great bridge track for DJs. All in all, John
Bigbooty makes pleasant, danceable electronic funk. Here's hoping that
future releases get a little more adventurous.
